Back-to-Back Fashion Miss for Kate Hudson

by Rechelle Tolinero

Can you imagine a star donning on a back-to-back fashion miss all for one day?

I guess we ought to ask Kate Hudson about that. Why she just deliberately failed to impress the fashion critics with her two looks in Monday (January 5).

First she wore this bright and glittering sequined Emilio Pucci minidress while visiting “Late Show with David Letterman” then she switched into a black and white fish scale patterned strapless mermaid dress. Fabulous? Nah!

While the look on the left looked as though the actress is having a post Christmas and New Year celebration, the one on the right is something I just couldn’t describe other than ugly. I don’t why Kate suddenly has developed a fetish over patterns but whatever it is, I hope she gets over it soon and give us better and more fab looks this year.

Penelope Cruz: To Fringe or Not To Fringe

by Rechelle Tolinero

The fringe may be one of the hottest things in celebrity fashion in 2008, but is it still the in thing for this year?

Let’s take a look at Penelope Cruz’s fringed black Oscar de la Renta during the 2008 New York Film Critic’s Circle Awards in New York City last Monday (January 5). Do we advise her to fringe or not to fringe (again)?

To Fringe

Penelope Cruz just seems to be synonymous to glamour already. I guess no matter what she wears, she still will stand out in the crowd.

Not to Fringe

But regardless of the actress’s innate glamour I think the see-through feature of the dress put Penelope in a not-so-hit fashion position. It’s just awkward to look at something that aren’t really supposed to be showcased, right?!

Dakota Fanning at the 20th anniversary of the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala

by Rechelle Tolinero

While I wasn’t too impressed with Anne Hathaway’s look at yesterday’s the 20th anniversary of the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala presented by Cartier in California, Dakota Fanning’s look showed otherwise.

With her baby blue strapless dress, the 13-year-old child star matches it with a pair of metallic low-heeled shoes. Her sexy curls down, and voila, a beautiful swan that she surely has become.

What I like most about Dakota is that she never rush into the ‘grown up’ looks; the charming frock, lovely hair, and comfortable lady shoes is just a proof of that. I love this girl!

Dakota, like Anne Hathaway is also one of the recipients of the event with her Rising Star Award. With her performances in movies like “I am Sam,” “Uptown Girls,” “Man on Fire,” and “Charlotte’s Web” Dakota has no doubt endeared the public.

Anne Hathaway at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala

by Rechelle Tolinero

Since appearing as Mia Thermopolis in Disney’s The Princess Diaries, I can honestly say that I am an Anne Hathaway fan.

However, since I promised for the New Year that Celebrity Fashion Watch would be nothing but an honest blog about celebrity fashion, I guess I wouldn’t let my being a fan affect my opinion on Anne’s look during the 20th anniversary of the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in California.

Clad in a body-hugging strapless black frock matched with a pair of sexy black heels, I honestly do not think that this is a great look for Anne to start the year.

Although it isn’t something I will call as ugly, but it isn’t stellar, too. Her hair definitely didn’t match the look while the frock made her look skinnier.

Too bad, it’s supposed to be her night for winning the Desert Palm Achievement Award for Acting.

Stars hit the beach

by Rechelle Tolinero

With the New Year in, the stars also have put down their winter clothes and switched on to a more comfortable one. – The beach wear.

But if you think the stars can get away from fashion hits and misses; then they better think again. With Celebrity Fashion Watch, the hits and misses don’t stop on the red carpets and parties.

So shall we check them in now?

Let’s go with our newlywed couples Mariah Carrey and husband Nick Cannon, Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

The first taking a detour from their trekking activity the snow-covered streets of Aspen to St. Bart’s at the Nikki Beach Resort.

From their usual matched outfits, Mariah and Nick finally decided that that kind of getup won’t do any good to their careers. And so they went to putting on ‘opposites’ yin-yang; black and white. Is this a way of proving how in-love they really are with each other?

From one newlywed to another, Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé also enjoyed the warm and sunny environment at St. Bart’s. J was cool and comfy with a striped shirt while B is just as refreshing with a white tank top.

Couples done, now let’s go to the sexy solos (at least on the photos) on the beach; AnnaLynne McCord, Kristin Cavallari, and Solange Knowles.

The faces you’ll see on the newsstands this month

by Rechelle Tolinero

Thinking for a post to kick off for this year sure is a burden for me. But fortunately, it’s not the same burden as those for mag publishers thinking for celebrities to kick off their New Year’s cover.

Check out some of the faces that you will see on your newsstands this month and let’s see if they made a good choice on their covers:

A first look at 2009, Johnny Depp graces the cover for Entertainment Weekly. I am a huge Johnny Depp fan so I sure would be bias on this… Great choice!

After giving birth to her first born, Bronx Mowgli, Ashlee Simpson lands on the cover for Life & Style. Unfortunately, this isn’t really what you call as a cover; it’s just the story that’s the cover and not the photo.

For Cosmopolitan Germany, it’s hot hot hot momma, Angelina Jolie that’s kicking off their year. Good choice? Definitely!

Meanwhile doing the cover for Shape’s January 2009 issue is High School Musical’s Ashley Tisdale. With Ashlee showing off the sexy side of her, I believe this one is a good choice.

It’s an oh-lala issue for Allure as femme fatale, Eva Mendes. Sexy it is, but for me it’s not really that… inviting.

Young and hot. That’s how Maxim’s kick off issue is with Hilary Duff posing on its cover. In business perspective, good choice. But for someone who’s being looked up by teens, I’m not sure. I guess I have yet to really see the inside.

Well those are just some of the faces you are to see in the newsstands this month. As to whether the publishers did a good or bad choice, you decide.

Celebrity Fashion Watch Reloaded

by Rechelle Tolinero

Happy New Year everyone!

The year 2008 has been a productive and prosperous year for Celebrity Fashion Watch; we’ve had several guest posts this year and a lot of comments from readers from various parts of the world. – Thank You!

As 2009 opens its door what are the things you can expect from CFW?

Well I’d love to describe those things as better, bigger, and more!

Better

This year, will be a year of better celebrity fashion coverage; from red carpets to parties, premieres, and even to the streets, Celebrity Fashion Watch will be there to keep you updated with the latest hits and misses in fashion.

Of course, as of CFW tradition, all we have are honest opinions, - if it’s bad, it’s bad; but if it’s fab, it surely will get acknowledged.

Aside from guest posts, I really am trying, planning, and thinking of means and ways to go on running some contests here. Hopefully, hopefully that gets pursued this year.

More

More special features coming up! So aside from our usual hits and misses, we’ll be introducing other weekly features here.

Trend in Review: The Accessories

by Rechelle Tolinero

We’ve had the jumpsuits and the purples; today is another 2008 trend review day.

Today, I am giving you the various accessories that hit the red carpets, the streets, and parties this year.

Are you ready? Let’s get started…

Scarves

Well this fashionable accessory has been mostly essential for the fall. While giving warmth to the stars, it also gives that chic but casual look.

Katie Holmes (photo above) is wearing an H&M scarf that’s only $60! On the other hand, Jennifer Garner’s gray Inhabit scarf costs $318.

Fringed Bags

They’re hip, they’re casual, and they’re definitely a head turner. It’s no wonder why stars love to complete their looks with fringe bags.

Mary-Kate Olsen was all glammed-up with her fringed bag at the opening of the MINI Rooftop NYC while Leona Lewis’ fringed bag completes her travel outfit at LAX.

Oversized Sunglasses

Whether it’s 2008 or 1978, oversized sunglasses would surely be an always-hit for the stars. It seems to be a must-have accessory for the stars; big enough to cover their lovely faces but not too big enough for them to be anonymous.

See how Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton sport their oversized sunglasses.

Bangles

This year would probably be a year of the returning retro style. And when it’s retro, bangles must have to be there.

Check out how Madonna rocks with her chunky bangles at the Gucci private dinner celebrating the Tattoo Heart collection in NYC; Kerry Washington glamored and shined with her diamond bangles at the Cinematheque Awards in Los Angeles. But if you think bangles are just great with the retro look, see how Carmen Electra wore her bold bangles in a sexy bikini.

Well these are just some of the hottest accessories of this year. Some will still be a hit next year, while some… who knows?!

Trend in Review: The Color Purple

by Rechelle Tolinero

Aside from jumpsuits which I gave to you on my previous post, the color purple must really be the “it” color this year.

Not only does it look and spell royalty, this shade also gives its wearer that hey-look-at-me look; it sure stands out!

And so it is no wonder that from purple shirts to purple bags, belts, coats, evening dresses, and accessories that you can think of, the celebrities just have them.

There was Clare Danes with her bright purple Miu Miu dress at the opening of the line’s newest boutique in New York City; Eva Longoria’s suede Gustto “Brescia” bag in bold purple; Fergie’s purple belt, Jessica Simpson’s purple suit; Jessica Alba’s pink and purple outfit; and Keira Knightley’s tube frock.

In addition to the stars above, Lindsay Lohan rocked in her purple mini; Mandy Moore has her chic purple coat; there’s Nicky Hilton’s bright purple handbag; Reese Witherspoon’s knockout purple gown; Rihanna’s purple gown, and Scarlett Johansson’s hot purple sheath.

Oh by the way, while purple seems to give that impression of an easy-hit look, there actually are some tips provided to perfect this look.

Here are some of them:

• Pair with black or other dark neutral like charcoal. A purple blouse under a dark suit looks great for work.
• Punch up purple by wearing with eye-popping brights like grass green or lime. A purple sweater with a bright green scarf radiates personality.
• Complement purple tones with purple eyeshadow, just keep the shadow very sheer and light (too-dark purple eyeshadow sometimes gives you a black eye look).
• Play purple off of equally strong prints. A bright purple dress with zebra (black and white) print shoes is fun and funky.

So are you ready to plaint the town, purple?!

Trend in Review: Jumpsuits

by Rechelle Tolinero

This year has relatively been a year of ‘subtle’ and ‘convenient’ fashion. By that, I mean in 2008, celebrities opted for looks that give more convenience and comfort.

Today, let’s take a look back into one of the trends this year that gave our stars their convenient chic look. – The jumpsuits.

First, what is a jumpsuit?

Denotation: Originally referred to the utilitarian one-piece garments used by parachuters and skydivers, but has come to be used as a common term for any one-piece garment with sleeves and legs. (Wikipedia.org)

In fashion, jumpsuits are simply defined as a one-piece suit.

Strengths
:

Jumpsuits are loved by many celebrities because of the instant ‘chicness’ it brings; it’s flattering, easy to wear, sexy and hip. With the star’s busy schedule, I believe jumpsuits provide them with a stand out look in no time.

Weaknesses:

But while jumpsuits seem to be everything fashion should be, one should also know that jumpsuits have a tendency “make your bottom look long and flat, rather than pert and round” (Daily Mail).

And one major drawback of this fashion trend? – Going to the bathroom!

Thinking of getting a jumpsuit next year? Here are some tips provided by About.com:

• Fit is everything! You don’t have to pour yourself into the one-piece like J-Lo, but a sleek look helps.
• Check key fit points: waist, rear end, bust. Bagging in one area, while sagging in the other will kill the look. This is one look that may require the finishing touches of a tailor (worth the investment!)
• A jumpsuit makes a statement. No need to pile on the jewels or layer on the makeup with this look.
• What you wear underneath is almost as important as the jumpsuit itself. Pantylines or bulges are magnified in a one-piece. Go for a thong, for ultimate sleekness. If you need some tummy control, try footless legwear with a control waist at Victoria’s Secret.
• Jumpsuits give you a long. lean line. Add even more visual height with a heel (boots or sandals look best).
• If you want to get the streamlined look of a jumpsuit, without the fit worries, try two pieces that give you the look. Match two pieces of the same color and add waist definition with a same-color belt.

Mariah’s holiday fashion statement

by Rechelle Tolinero

Sticking to my word that this day would be a nice-and-kind-me day because of the Holidays, I am bringing you Mariah Carrey (with her husband, Nick Cannon) during a visit at her family’s jewelry store Joan Boyce, in Aspen on Wednesday afternoon (December 24).

On normal days, I would’ve commented:

Geesh… I know white is always right, - classic and elegant, but somehow this look kind of reminds me of Cruella de Vil, especially that Nick’s carrying a puppy with him. I just don’t understand why they (Nick, Mariah, and their dog) really have to match their looks.

But because it’s Christmas:

Now don’t they look lovely together? Mariah’s white ensemble is just elegant and classy; so ‘White Christmas’, eh?!

Oh well, which version do you prefer? The normal-me one or the nice one?

Holiday greetings from Celebrity Fashion Watch

by Rechelle Tolinero

We’ve all seen this year’s the best(s) and worst(s) in the world of celebrity fashion. But since it’s the holidays; the time of the year where we ought to be nice and kind to everyone, this specific post will feature neither hit nor miss from any celebrity (of course this is just for this post).

I would like to take post as an opportunity to thank everybody who has been coming in here, dropping by to check out my articles everyday. Thank you to all my readers, guest posters, commentors, and visitors.

It has been an amazing year here in Celebrity Fashion Watch, and hopefully the coming year will be a mark to a much better and bigger celebrity fashion coverage.

Again, from Celebrity Fashion Watch, I would like to extend my warmest greetings.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

“The Hills” Women in Fashion

by Rechelle Tolinero

Women and fashion always get together; it’s as is these two are inseparable.

And so for the season 4 finale of the “The Hills” at Tavern last Monday (December 22), let’s see how its women outwit each other with their respective looks.

Audrina Patridge

Looking gorgeous as ever, Audrina graced the event wearing a wine coloured strapless Alexander McQueen Fall 2007 gown, - simple yet hot!

Lauren Conrad

Almost perfect.

Well that is how Lauren Conrad exactly looked with her multi-coloured Phillip Lim 3.1 dress. I don’t know, it seems like something’s missing to complete this look; a belt, perhaps?

Stephanie Pratt

A nymph, a fairy, or what?! Surely, Stephanie Pratt must’ve something in mind when she wore this Alexander Wang Resort 2009 dress at the event.

Whitney Port

Now this is a nymph, Stephanie. Whitney Port definitely knew what she’s doing when she decided to don on a Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2009 gown with a hair accessory from this same collection.

So who do you think dressed best?!

Vanna Bonta Beauty Secret: Sparkles

by Rechelle Tolinero

It’s the 24th of December, a day before Christmas, but that doesn’t stop us from eyeing in the celebrity fashion world.

Today it’s guest post time! Or shall I say, Vanna Bonta time…

Check it out:

Vanna Bonta
has dressed up her adorable Chow, Sky, in holiday love. On a MySpace holiday message Vanna blogs you don’t need a reason to be joyful (take it from dolphins and dogs).

The best is when Vanna talks Rudolph to all us reindeer with this fabulous tidbit: “…remember that red and shiny nose you were called names over is perfect to those who love you, and will one day light up the sky!”

Vanna gets really deep with this video she posted. Be sure your speakers are on and crank it up. Seriously now — have some fun.

Even hard boiled fashionistas know the best cosmetic for beauty is joy (that’s a Chinese saying actually). Happy holidays!

The Women at Flaunt Magazine’s 10th Anniversary Party

by Rechelle Tolinero

They say that women are all alike but just differ in their shapes and sizes. While that may be politically correct, in the fashion world, you will know that there is more to women other than their shapes and sizes.

As an example, here are some women who attended Flaunt Magazine’s 10th Anniversary Party and Annual Holiday Toy Drive at Holmby Hills, California last Thursday (December 18) to prove women’s uniqueness to one another.

Eva Mendes

Knock-out beauty.

Wearing a gorgeous turquoise dress with embellished neckline and bow detail paired with nude pumps, Eva definitely stood out in the crowd with her beauty, charm, and sex appeal.

It’s actually amazing to use “charming” to describe Eva’s look considering her femme fatale image.

Kelly Osbourne

Awful smile.

Clad in a zebra print off-shoulder dress with silver shimmering pumps, the TV personality showed her ‘uniqueness’ with her smile as her weapon. Unfortunately, that one isn’t a compliment at all.

Don’t you think Kelly should really practice the art of smiling?

Jessica Zhor

Hot chic
.

Putting on a black ensemble and strappy heels, Jessica Zhor proves that a woman need not show much to be called ‘hot’.

On second thought, maybe Jess would like to consider a little hair fixin/combing there.

Kim Kardashian

Lost goddess.

Every woman is a goddess in her own right. However, when you are seem lost between being a Greek and Egyptian goddess, that is where things turn out bad like Kim’s silver shimmering asymmetrical gown.

So the frock was Greek but the make-up and the hair is somehow Egyptian? Hmmm…

Now don’t we all love seeing women’s variety other than their shapes and sizes?
